Meet P.Priime: The Rising Star of Nigeria’s Afrobeats Scene

At just 23 years old, P.Priime has emerged as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s thriving Afrobeats scene. Born Peace Emmanuel Aderogba Oredope, he gained recognition early on, collaborating with notable artists like Burna Boy and Rema. His journey from a young music enthusiast to a leading producer exemplifies the rapid evolution of Afrobeats on the global stage.

Afrobeats, a genre that blends traditional African rhythms with contemporary pop, has its roots in 1970s Nigeria and has recently garnered international acclaim. This year’s Grammy Awards nominations included several Nigerian superstars, showcasing the increasing influence of Afrobeats within mainstream music. The genre’s infectious energy and danceable beats have captured audiences worldwide, with artists like Burna Boy and Tems already winning Grammy Awards.

P.Priime attributes the genre’s global appeal to its vibrant “groove,” which invites listeners to dance and enjoy themselves. While waiting in a studio in Lekki, he described the joyful nature of Afrobeats. Despite being a relatively new artist, his contributions to the genre have made a significant impact, collaborating on numerous successful tracks such as Rema’s “March Am” and “Villain.”

His passion for music began in childhood, nurtured by his family’s support. P.Priime’s talent was recognized at just 17 when he produced DJ Cuppy’s “Gelato,” which quickly gained popularity. He has continued to refine his skills, co-producing significant projects like Wizkid’s “Made in Lagos,” which was nominated for a Grammy in 2022.

P.Priime honed his abilities at the Sarz Academy, a training initiative established by accomplished producer Sarz. His fast-paced work style and keen musical ear impressed industry veterans, enabling him to establish connections with influential artists. Currently, he is preparing to co-judge a new reality TV show, Next Afrobeats Star, which aims to spotlight emerging talent in the industry.

The competition has attracted thousands of applicants, with only a select few advancing to the audition phase. The winner will receive a lucrative music contract, offering a significant opportunity for young artists. P.Priime believes initiatives like this can act as vital platforms for aspiring musicians.

He emphasizes the importance of self-confidence and authenticity for artists aiming to succeed in a competitive landscape. Drawing on his experiences, he advises against imitating established stars, suggesting that originality is key to making a lasting impact in the industry. As Afrobeats continues to evolve, P.Priime’s role as a producer and mentor highlights the potential for innovation and growth within this dynamic musical genre.
