Max Verstappen showcased an impressive performance to clinch victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, further strengthening his position in the championship race. His triumph was aided by the disqualification of McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who finished second and fourth, respectively, but were found to have skid blocks that did not meet the required specifications.
The disqualifications have put Verstappen, a four-time defending champion, on equal footing with Piastri in terms of points, while he trails Norris by just 24 points. With only two races left in the season, Verstappen’s hopes of a fifth consecutive title hinge on Norris’s ability to avoid making significant mistakes in these final events.
With a total of 58 points available in the upcoming races, Norris needs to secure just two more points than his rivals in the next weekend’s race in Qatar, which includes a sprint race, to clinch his first championship title. Verstappen took command early in Las Vegas, seizing the lead from pole-sitter Norris at the first turn and maintaining control throughout the race, ultimately finishing over 20 seconds ahead of the field.
Reflecting on his victory, Verstappen credited Red Bull’s tire strategy for his success in Las Vegas. He noted that while the race is often challenging for the team regarding tire management, he felt more in control this time, allowing him to push harder without compromising the potential of his tires.
George Russell of Mercedes initially crossed the finish line in third but was subsequently promoted to second after the disqualifications. His teammate Kimi Antonelli moved up to third place following Norris’s and Piastri’s penalties. The race conditions were favorable, with clear weather following a challenging qualifying session marred by heavy rain, described by Verstappen as akin to driving on ice.
Norris, who entered the race on a high after consecutive wins in Mexico and Sao Paulo, attempted a bold move to defend his position against Verstappen but ultimately lost control, which allowed Verstappen to take the lead. After the race, Norris admitted his aggressive approach at turn one was excessive, leading to his early setback.
Despite starting from fifth on the grid, Piastri faced difficulties at the beginning of the race, resulting in wheel contact with another competitor. After surrendering a significant lead in the championship since his August victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, he recognized that his chances of contending for the title had diminished significantly following the Las Vegas race.
The disqualification of both McLaren drivers was a notable incident, highlighting the strict regulations around skid blocks designed to prevent cars from achieving lower heights for increased speed. This is not the first time such penalties have impacted drivers, with Russell facing similar consequences last season after his win in Belgium for the same violation, and Lewis Hamilton experiencing penalties for related infractions in previous races.
As the season heads into its final two weekends, the dynamics of the championship battle have shifted dramatically, with Verstappen now a strong contender after his Las Vegas win. The next race in Qatar will be crucial for all drivers competing for the title, with strategies and performances under close scrutiny.
