India’s cricket team is facing a potential challenge ahead of the second test against South Africa, scheduled to start in Guwahati. The captain, Shubman Gill, may miss the match due to concerns over recurring neck spasms, as indicated by batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.
Gill had to retire hurt during the first innings of the previous test, which India lost by 30 runs. Following that game, he traveled with the team to Guwahati, but his fitness remains uncertain. Kotak provided an update, stating that Gill is recovering well, but a final decision regarding his participation will be made tomorrow evening.
Team management is weighing the risks associated with Gill’s condition. If there is confidence that the neck issue won’t recur, he will be in the lineup. However, if doubts persist, the decision will lean towards allowing him to rest for an additional match to prioritize the team’s overall performance.
In the event that Gill is unable to play, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will take the reins of the team. Kotak emphasized the impact of losing a player and leader like Gill but noted that the team has capable players ready to step up in his absence.
Should Gill sit out, there are several options for the top order, including Sai Sudharsan, along with Devdutt Padikkal and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who are also available as substitutes.
The upcoming series will see India facing South Africa in a total of three one-day internationals and five T20 internationals from November 30 to December 19. The team will be looking to overcome the challenges presented by injuries and maintain a strong showing against their opponents.
