Creating Enchantment: Ahmed Khan Reflects on Choreographing ‘Rangeela’

Ahmed Khan, a prominent figure in Bollywood, reflects on the lasting impact of “Rangeela” as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. This film, which marked his debut as a choreographer alongside the late Saroj Khan, remains a significant highlight in his career.

Released on September 8, 1995, “Rangeela” was directed by Ram Gopal Varma and starred Urmila Matondkar and Aamir Khan. In honor of the film’s milestone, it has been re-released in theaters, allowing a new generation to experience its charm.

The soundtrack of “Rangeela” features memorable songs that have stood the test of time, including “Rangeela Re” and “Hai Rama.” Khan recalls the excitement of being part of the project, describing it as a magical experience. Despite the pressures of filmmaking, he notes the team’s belief in their work, guided by Varma’s vision.

After “Rangeela,” Ahmed Khan continued to make a mark with films such as “Mudhalvan” and “Nayak: The Real Hero.” His journey took a turn toward directing with his 2004 film “Lakeer,” which, although not commercially successful, paved the way for subsequent projects like “Fool & Final” and the “Baaghi” sequels.

From a young age, Khan aspired to be a director, inspired by the direction he witnessed on sets during his child acting role in “Mr India.” He understood then that the director held a pivotal role in filmmaking, and that ambition has shaped his career.

Looking back, Khan mentions his 2020 film “Baaghi 3,” which he feels did not receive the recognition it deserved due to its release during the pandemic. He acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding audience preferences, but expresses a desire for his work to be appreciated more widely.

Currently, Khan is preparing for the release of “Welcome to the Jungle,” the latest addition to the “Welcome” franchise. With a notable ensemble cast, including Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon, he believes the film promises to deliver entertainment that will resonate with viewers. His confidence stems from the blend of comedic talent involved in the project, aiming to create a fun cinematic experience.
