Billy Bob Thornton’s Surprise Cameo in ‘1883’ Leads to Landman Season 2 Success

Paramount+ has recently made headlines with the explosive debut of the second season of its oil drama, Landman. The series set a record for the streamer, with its first episode, titled “Death and a Sunset,” racking up over 9.2 million views within just a week of its release. The second episode, “Sins of the Father,” premiered on November 23, 2025, and new episodes will continue to be released weekly.

Viewers have quickly embraced Landman season 2, signaling a strong interest in the storyline and its characters. The cast features notable actors such as Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, and Sam Elliott. Prior to the season’s launch, Demi Moore hinted at a “juicy” plot that would keep audiences engaged, an assertion backed up by the impressive viewership numbers.

Billy Bob Thornton, who plays the lead role of ‘Tommy Norris’, shared insights into how he secured his role in Landman. During a Q&A, he explained that creator Taylor Sheridan reached out to him for a cameo in 1883, a decision that ultimately led to a larger opportunity. Thornton revealed, “Taylor called me one time and said, ‘I wrote a cameo in this thing I’m doing called 1883, and would you come to Fort Worth for two days to do two scenes? I need a guy who has done this before. Can you come shoot everybody in the saloon and leave?’”

Following the cameo, Thornton received a surprising invitation from Sheridan to a screening, where he learned that a series had been created specifically for him. This series, based on the podcast Boomtown, would focus on the oil industry in Texas. He recounted his reaction, stating, “I thought, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.’ And then, I read it and thought, ‘That’s even more interesting than I thought it was gonna be.’”

In Landman, Thornton’s character, Tommy Norris, faces the challenges and upheavals of the West Texas oil boom. The narrative explores the darker side of the industry, showcasing the corruption and dangers that come with wealth and power. While the specifics of Thornton’s compensation for the role remain undisclosed, industry reports suggest he earns around USD 1 million per episode.

As the second season unfolds, viewers are eager to see how the story will develop for Tommy Norris, particularly as he navigates the morally complex world of oil procurement and business. Fans are already engaging with the series, making it a hot topic for binge-watching sessions. How are you finding Landman season 2?
