Spin-bowling all-rounder Will Jacks has been named as the replacement for paceman Mark Wood in the England team for the upcoming second Ashes Test against Australia in Brisbane. The announcement was made on Tuesday, following Wood’s knee soreness sustained during the first Test.
Australia secured a commanding win over England in the series opener in Perth, triumphing by eight wickets within just two days. This victory gave Australia a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. As Wood’s fitness remains a concern—having missed much of the previous season due to knee issues—England has opted for Jacks, who is set to play his first Test since 2022.
Ollie Pope, a key batter in the England lineup, expressed confidence in Jacks’ abilities. He highlighted Jacks’ impressive development and versatility, particularly in the white-ball format, suggesting that this Test presents a significant opportunity for him to showcase his skills with the red ball.
Despite not claiming any wickets in the first Test, Wood’s express pace was considered a vital asset for England, particularly in the initial innings. However, Jacks’ inclusion indicates a strategic shift, moving away from a purely pace-focused attack, which has been characteristic of the Gabba’s traditionally fast and bouncy pitch.
Jacks, known for his batting prowess in addition to his spin bowling, is expected to strengthen the lower order of England’s batting lineup. His debut performance in Pakistan three years ago, where he took 6-161, showcased his potential, although he is predominantly recognized for his batting capabilities.
Zak Crawley will maintain his position at the top of the batting order despite struggling in Perth with a pair of scores. This decision aligns with the perspectives of coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, who are inclined to support their players through tough patches rather than make hasty changes.
As England prepares for the day-night Test commencing Thursday in Brisbane, Pope acknowledged the need for the team to remain resilient under pressure. He emphasized the importance of balancing aggression with composure when facing a potent bowling attack like Australia’s.
In light of Australia’s strong home record, Pope noted that England can draw motivation from previous matches where other teams, like the West Indies, had success against Australia. With a blend of determination and strategic discipline, England aims to level the series.
The confirmed England lineup includes: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Jofra Archer.
