Gustaakh Ishq: A Heartfelt Drama That Captivates with Naseeruddin Shah’s Brilliance

Gustaakh Ishq: A Film Review

Director: Vibhu Puri
Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma, Fatima Sana Shaikh
Rating: ★★★★

Set in the poetic landscape of Delhi in 1998, Gustaakh Ishq immerses viewers in a world where dialogue transforms into lyrical expressions. This film, brimming with Urdu nuances, captures the essence of its time, enriched by the vibrant culture and language.

At its heart, the narrative centers around three key characters: Nawazuddin Saifuddin (Vijay Varma), Mannat (Fatima Sana Shaikh), and Aziz Beg (Naseeruddin Shah). Nawazuddin is determined to save his father’s struggling printing press and discovers the compelling literary works of Aziz. With hopes of turning his fortunes, he seeks to convince Aziz to publish his writings. During this journey, he finds love with Mannat, Aziz’s divorced daughter, adding layers of personal stakes to the central plot. The film explores whether Aziz will allow his work to be published and if Mannat and Nawazuddin will find their path to each other.

Director Vibhu Puri skillfully evokes nostalgia for the late ’90s, a feat further enhanced by the meticulous production design crafted by Madhumita Sen and Ajay Sharma. This film also marks fashion designer Manish Malhotra’s theatrical debut, showcasing his keen sense of style that resonates throughout the film.

The storyline unfolds in a leisurely pace, particularly in the first half, which some might find overly indulgent. The dialogue often flows with a poetic elegance, sometimes at the risk of alienating those who may not be as familiar with Urdu. Writers Prashant Jha and Vibhu manage to develop the world and its characters with depth, though it takes time to fully captivate the audience.

The second half of the film tightens its focus, exploring the delicate relationship between art and the artist. Amidst a culture obsessed with monetisation, Gustaakh Ishq poses thought-provoking questions about the nature of artistic creation. Aziz’s poignant reflection on artistry lingers: “voh shayar hi kya jise mashoor hone ke liye bazaar ke mohar ki zaroorat ho.” This encapsulates the film’s underlying theme—the love for one’s craft that defies commercial pressures.

Musically, Vishal Bhardwaj’s composition enhances the narrative, particularly through the title track “Ul Jalool Ishq,” which resonates emotionally with the audience.

Performance-wise, Vijay Varma delivers a commendable portrayal, particularly in pivotal moments. Fatima Sana Shaikh shines in her role, while Sharib Hashmi adds humor as Bhure. Nevertheless, Naseeruddin Shah stands out, embodying his character with admirable depth and presence, elevating the film significantly.

In conclusion, while Gustaakh Ishq may test the viewer’s patience at certain points, it ultimately rewards with a profound experience. The film invites reflection and leaves a lasting warmth, displaying a narrative that, while not groundbreaking, is heartfelt and emotionally engaging.
