In the recently released film “Dhurandhar,” Akshaye Khanna portrays Rehman Dakait, a notorious gangster from Karachi who dominated the criminal underworld during the 2000s. The film, directed by Aditya Dhar, is a semi-fictionalized account of real events concerning India’s fight against terrorism emanating from Pakistan.
Set against the backdrop of Karachi’s Lyari, known for its gang activity, “Dhurandhar” follows the story of Rehman, who rules the area alongside his cousin Uzair Baloch, played by Danish Pandor. Akshaye Khanna’s portrayal of Rehman has garnered significant attention, with critics noting that his on-screen representation offers a glimpse into the life of a man whose real-life actions were even more chilling.
Rehman Dakait, born Sardar Abdul Rehman Baloch in 1975, was deeply involved in criminal activities from a young age. By the time he was a teenager, he was already engaged in drug trafficking and had committed violent crimes, including the murder of his mother at the age of 19. This shocking incident is depicted in “Dhurandhar,” albeit with some dramatization for cinematic effect. Following his ascent in the criminal hierarchy, Rehman became the leader of Haji Laloo’s gang after Laloo’s arrest in 2001.
Throughout the 2000s, Rehman established a fearsome reputation in Lyari, with associates like Uzair Baloch and Baba Ladla by his side. Reports suggest that they committed heinous acts, including using severed heads as macabre trophies to assert dominance over rivals. Their reign of terror continued until Rehman was killed in a police shootout in August 2009 at the age of 34, marking a significant event in the ongoing conflict between law enforcement and organized crime in Karachi.
“Dhurandhar” also features a strong supporting cast, including Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, and R Madhavan. While the film has received mixed reviews from critics, it has impressively grossed approximately ₹152 crore worldwide over its opening weekend, signaling a positive reception from audiences.
Overall, the film presents a mix of fact and fiction, highlighting both the complexities of the characters and the broader socio-political issues at play in the region during a turbulent period. The exploration of Rehman Dakait’s life serves as a reminder of the harsh realities faced by many involved in crime and the impact such individuals have on their communities.
