Chelsea’s manager Enzo Maresca expressed disappointment following his team’s 2-1 defeat against Atalanta in the Champions League. The match took a turn in the second half as Chelsea could not maintain their initial lead.
Joao Pedro put Chelsea ahead with a goal in the 25th minute. However, Atalanta came back strong after halftime, leveling the score with Gianluca Scamacca’s goal, followed by Charles De Ketelaere’s winner. This shift in momentum highlighted Chelsea’s inability to capitalize on their first-half advantage.
Maresca acknowledged that his team missed crucial opportunities to extend their lead. He noted, “After we conceded the 1-1 (goal), we lost a little bit of control of the game, and then we conceded the second one.” The manager criticized the ease with which both goals were conceded, suggesting they were avoidable.
With this result, Atalanta is now poised near the top of the Champions League standings, collecting 13 points, while Chelsea trails with 10. The stakes are high for Chelsea, as they must win their upcoming matches against Pafos and Napoli to avoid a potentially challenging playoff for a place in the next round.
Maresca mentioned the importance of closing the group stage with strong performances: “Probably with two wins, probably with 16 points, you can be in the top eight.” He emphasized the need for focus on the next games, stating, “If we want to try to finish top eight, we need to win both.”
Chelsea’s next challenge awaits against Everton in the Premier League on Saturday. This match will be crucial for the team’s confidence and momentum as they aim to bounce back from this European setback.
