The 30th International Film Festival of Kerala is set to commence on December 12, showcasing a variety of cinematic works. The festival will kick off with “Palestine 36,” a film directed by Annemarie Jacir that delves into the historical Palestinian uprising against British colonization.
“Palestine 36” is a significant narrative that marks the year the Palestinian people began their revolt against British governance and Zionism, according to a statement from the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, the organizers of the festival. This year’s event is scheduled to run from December 12 to 19 in Thiruvananthapuram, celebrating three decades of cinematic excellence.
This film has garnered notable acclaim, having received the best film award at the Tokyo International Film Festival and serving as Palestine’s official submission for the best international feature film category at the 98th Academy Awards. In addition to the opening feature, Jacir’s earlier work, “Wajib,” recognized with the Golden Crow Pheasant at IFFK 2017, will also be showcased during the festival.
Recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema, the festival will present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Malian filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako. His extensive work has significantly influenced global cinema, and this award honors his esteemed career.
Abderrahmane Sissako, who began his journey in Kiffa, Mauritania, and later moved to Mali, made his first short film in 1989 as part of his graduation project. His debut feature film, “Life on Earth,” premiered in 1999 and was part of the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. However, it was his 2014 film “Timbuktu” that solidified his position in the cinematic landscape.
Sissako’s films often address themes of globalization, identity, and the everyday challenges faced in Africa, effectively highlighting the continent’s narrative on the global stage. During this year’s festival, five of his films will be screened: “Life on Earth,” “Waiting for Happiness,” “Bamako,” “Timbuktu,” and “Black Tea.”
The IFFK’s Lifetime Achievement Award has been a prestigious accolade since its inception in 2009, awarded to filmmakers who have significantly impacted the cinematic arts throughout their careers. Previous honorees include luminaries such as Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog, and Majid Majidi.
This landmark edition of the festival promises to celebrate diverse storytelling and honor individuals who have shaped the world of film over the years.
