Ram Gopal Varma Discusses His Relationship with Urmila Matondkar

Urmila Matondkar has been a prominent figure in the Indian film industry since her childhood acting days. Her career took a significant turn with Ram Gopal Varma’s 1995 film, Rangeela, which solidified her position as a leading actress. The successful collaboration between Matondkar and Varma spanned four films, prompting speculation regarding a potential romantic relationship between them.

In a recent interview with Zoom, Ram Gopal Varma addressed the persistent rumors surrounding his alleged affair with Urmila Matondkar. He noted that while they collaborated on four successful films—Rangeela, Daud, Satya, and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya—the rumors only seemed to swirl around their professional relationship, unlike his collaborations with other actors such as Amitabh Bachchan which received little attention. Verma emphasized Matondkar’s versatility as an actress, highlighting why he had chosen to work with her multiple times.

Ram Gopal Varma’s admiration for Urmila’s beauty was also evident in his autobiography, Guns & Thighs: The Story of My Life, where he recounted that her captivating presence inspired him to create Rangeela. He reflected on his first impression of her, stating she was the first actress to leave a significant impact on him. He acknowledged that, despite her previous roles not achieving much success, her beauty and charisma were undeniable.

On a personal note, Ram Gopal Varma’s marriage to Ratna Varma reportedly ended due to his close relationship with Urmila, with rumors suggesting conflict occurred when Ratna discovered the nature of their connection. Although these claims remain unverified, they add a layer of complexity to the narrative. Urmila Matondkar, for her part, married businessman Mohsin Akhtar Mir in March 2016, but after eight years together, she filed for divorce in 2024.

The discussions surrounding Ram Gopal Varma’s revelations about Urmila Matondkar reflect the curiosity around their past collaborations and the intertwining of their personal and professional lives. This incident raises questions about the broader implications of such rumors in the film industry and their impact on the careers of those involved.
