India secured a convincing victory over South Africa by 101 runs in the first T20 International held in Cuttack. This match marked an impressive comeback for Hardik Pandya, who played a crucial role with both bat and ball.
After returning from a two-month injury layoff, Pandya made an immediate impact, scoring a rapid 59 runs off just 28 balls, which included four sixes and six fours. His innings was pivotal in helping India reach a competitive total of 175-6 in their allotted 20 overs, especially after the team was struggling at 78-4.
South Africa’s innings, however, was a stark contrast as they crumbled to just 74 runs, their lowest T20I total to date. Every Indian bowler contributed with wickets, showcasing a united team performance that dismantled their opponents efficiently.
Pandya expressed satisfaction with his performance post-match, stating he focused on timing rather than brute force, which proved effective on a wicket with “a bit of spice.” His confident play was essential in turning the game in India’s favor after a challenging start.
The Indian innings began on a shaky note with opener Shubman Gill returning to the pavilion after only two balls due to a mishap against Lungi Ngidi. Other early wickets fell quickly, putting hosts in a precarious position. However, Pandya’s entry shifted the momentum, as he attacked South Africa’s bowlers decisively.
The Indian innings gained stability thanks to Pandya’s aggressive batting, especially during the death overs, where his explosive style was instrumental in enhancing the total. Meanwhile, South Africa struggled to form partnerships, and India’s bowlers capitalized on this weakness.
Arshdeep Singh made early inroads by obtaining the wicket of Quinton de Kock, leaving the South African side in disarray. A successful review helped dismiss Tristan Stubbs, giving Singh his second wicket and further compounding South Africa’s problems.
While Dewald Brevis and Marco Jansen attempted to resist the Indian attack, they could not halt the frequent loss of wickets. With consistent breakthroughs from Arshdeep, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, and Axar Patel, the South African batting lineup collapsed, with Pandya also claiming the key wicket of David Miller.
With this victory, India takes a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The teams are set to clash again on Thursday in Chandigarh, where South Africa will be looking to bounce back from this heavy defeat.
