What Happened to Candy Montgomery After the Infamous Murder Trial

Elizabeth Olsen has recently garnered significant attention for her portrayal of Candy Montgomery in the HBO Max miniseries “Love & Death.” Based on a true crime story that took place in Texas in 1980, the series delves into the shocking events surrounding the affair between Candy Montgomery and her friend Betty Gore, leading to a brutal murder and a trial that captivated the nation.

Set against the backdrop of suburban life, Candy Montgomery appeared to embody the typical housewife in Wylie, Texas. Married to Pat Montgomery and a mother of two, she had settled into what she described as her “dream house in the country” after moving there in 1977. However, beneath this façade of domestic happiness, Candy later reflected on her marriage as “very boring,” expressing a yearning for excitement and a break from her monotonous daily life.

Candy Montgomery developed a close friendship with Betty Gore, played by Lily Rabe, after they met at a local Methodist Church, which served as a social hub for both women. Betty, a school teacher married to Allan Gore, managed a stressful home life compounded by marital problems. The friendships took a dark turn when Candy and Allan began a secret affair, ignited by a playful moment during a church volleyball game in 1978, as reported by People. This affair would sow the seeds of tension that ultimately led to tragedy.

On June 13, 1980, the situation escalated when Betty confronted Candy about the affair. The confrontation culminated in a horrific act: Candy struck Betty 41 times with an axe, resulting in her death. At the time, Allan was away on a work trip, and neighbors discovered the scene of the crime, leading authorities to quickly focus on Candy as the primary suspect due to her being the last person seen with Betty.

Following her arrest on June 26, 1980, Candy Montgomery received bail with considerable assistance from her church community. During the subsequent trial, she claimed self-defense, arguing that Betty had attacked her first. The case featured testimony from hypnosis sessions and experts who evaluated Candy’s childhood trauma and her recollections of the violent encounter. Ultimately, on October 29, 1980, the jury acquitted her of murder, marking one of Texas’s most sensational criminal cases.

Post-trial, Candy largely retreated from the public eye, relocating to Georgia where she pursued a career as a certified family counselor. She eventually separated from her husband, Pat. Betty’s two daughters, Alisa and Bethany, were raised by their grandparents in Kansas, further highlighting the personal tragedies resulting from the events.

“Love & Death” presents a gripping exploration of how ordinary suburban lives can hide dark secrets. It navigates themes of love, betrayal, and the devastating outcomes that can arise when trusted relationships unravel, ultimately turning a quiet community upside down.
