Legendary Puerto Rican Salsa Leader Rafael Ithier Passes Away

Rafael Ithier, a renowned musician and co-founder of the iconic salsa band El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, has passed away at the age of 99. His contributions to salsa music have left a lasting impact, influencing many contemporary artists, including Bad Bunny.

Ithier’s death was confirmed by family attorney Víctor Rivera to radio station WKAQ over the weekend. The specific cause of his passing has not yet been disclosed. Marlese Sifre, the mayor of Ponce, expressed profound sorrow, hailing Ithier as a significant figure whose work helped elevate Puerto Rican identity through music.

Born in San Juan, Ithier grew up in the Río Piedras neighborhood. After losing his father at a young age, he turned to music for solace and support. He began playing guitar at ten, earning tips performing in local stores. His passion for music led him to join his first group at 15 and learn multiple instruments, including the Cuban tres and piano.

At 25, Ithier served in the U.S. Army in Korea, and during a stint in New York, he formed “The Borinqueneers Mambo Kings,” inspired by a distinguished local military regiment. After returning to Puerto Rico, he became a member of Cortijo y Su Combo but faced a moment of uncertainty when their lead singer was incarcerated. Planning to shift to law, he was persuaded to remain in music, which ultimately led to the formation of El Gran Combo.

Ithier remained at the helm of El Gran Combo for over fifty years, known for his charismatic presence and dedication to the craft. He once attributed the band’s success to discipline and the lessons learned during his military service. Under his leadership, the orchestra became a training ground for aspiring musicians, earning the nickname “the University of Salsa.”

El Gran Combo embarked on tours across five continents, releasing more than 40 albums and producing numerous hits like “Jala Jala” and “Me Liberé.” Ithier’s influence extended beyond music, as he instilled values of responsibility and professionalism in his band members, shaping many successful careers.

The news of Ithier’s passing sparked an outpouring of tributes from the salsa community and beyond. Musicians and fans remembered him as a dedicated artist who brought pride to Puerto Rico. Agustín Montañez Allman, a governmental advocate, remarked on Ithier’s exemplary life and his profound connection to Puerto Rican culture.

In recognition of Ithier’s significant contributions, Puerto Rico’s Governor Jenniffer Colón announced plans for an official mourning day. She emphasized that his musical legacy transcends boundaries and will continue to resonate through future generations. Rafael Ithier leaves behind a legacy as a beloved figure in the world of music, along with his wife and five children.
