Australia’s cricket team has announced that fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will miss the entirety of the Ashes series against England due to persistent injuries. This announcement was made by head coach Andrew McDonald, who confirmed that Hazlewood’s absence will be felt as he was expected to play a crucial role in the five-Test series.
After sitting out the initial matches in Perth and Brisbane, Hazlewood’s chances of contributing have been diminished further. McDonald expressed disappointment over the situation, stating, “Really flat for him.” He highlighted the unexpected setbacks that have hindered Hazlewood’s participation, noting the disappointment for the player who had hoped to make a significant impact.
The 33-year-old bowler initially suffered a hamstring strain prior to the Perth Test. Just last week, he encountered a new issue closer to the calf and Achilles area, which has ultimately sidelined him for the rest of the series. This injury news coincides with England’s announcement that fast bowler Mark Wood will also miss the remainder of the Ashes due to a knee injury.
Despite Hazlewood’s absence, McDonald reassured fans that regular captain Pat Cummins is on track to return for the upcoming match in Adelaide. Australia currently leads the series 2-0 and can retain the Ashes with a draw in this match. Cummins had also missed the opening Tests while recovering from a lower back injury but has reportedly been able to participate in match simulations, indicating a return to form.
Describing Cummins’ progress, McDonald noted that the captain was training at Allan Border Field while the rest of the team was at the Gabba. He emphasized that the simulation exercises have prepared Cummins to return to play, stating, “His body’s ready to go.” Unless unforeseen issues arise, Cummins is expected to lead the team in the next match.
In a surprising move, selectors have dropped veteran spinner Nathan Lyon for the first home Test since 2012, leading to a strong emotional response from the player. Recognizing Lyon’s extensive experience and contributions to the team, McDonald stated that the spinner has the right to feel disappointed but assured fans that Lyon will have a “big part” to play in the remainder of the series.
The team remains in a strong position although they face challenges with injuries. The upcoming matches will reveal how they adapt to these changes as they aim to secure the Ashes against a competitive England side.
