Oscar Piastri has expressed his eagerness to unwind after a tumultuous Formula One season that concluded with disappointment. The Australian driver, with the aspiration of becoming the nation’s first Formula One champion in 45 years, ultimately finished third overall, while his teammate Lando Norris claimed the title in Abu Dhabi.
As he prepares to return to Australia, Piastri looks forward to reconnecting with family and friends and enjoying some time away from the track. He acknowledged the demanding nature of the season, stating, “as enjoyable as driving the fastest cars in the world is, a break now and again is always a nice thing.”
In addition to enjoying his downtime, Piastri has been following Australia’s Ashes series against England, where Australia currently leads 2-0. He hopes to attend the fourth Test match in Melbourne after Christmas, admitting a mix of excitement and apprehension about the series’ outcome. “It’s been enjoyable to watch for the last couple of weeks,” he remarked.
Piastri’s performance this season was noteworthy, winning seven races, matching Norris’s tally, and coming just shy of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Looking toward the future, the upcoming season marks the advent of a new engine era coupled with significant rule changes, which may shift the competitive landscape. With the season set to kick off in Australia on March 8, pre-season testing and launches have been scheduled for January.
As McLaren enters the new season as double champions, having secured a second consecutive constructors’ title in October, Piastri aims to target his teammate’s championship. He expressed the importance of enjoying the off-season to return revitalized for the upcoming challenges.
Piastri acknowledged Norris’s impressive season and recognized him as a deserving champion. However, he maintains confidence in the fairness of the team’s approach, noting, “I don’t have any concerns that that will change at all.”
Reflecting on his growth as a driver, Piastri credits his competitive dynamic with Norris, stating that the challenge has ultimately improved his skills. While these experiences have sometimes been uncomfortable, he believes they have contributed positively to the team’s overall performance. Looking ahead, he anticipates productive discussions during the off-season to refine their strategies for the next year, emphasizing the team’s commitment to giving both drivers an equal opportunity to contest for the championship.
