Young Croatian tennis player Petra Marcinko celebrated her 20th birthday in style, clinching the title at the 28th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory over former world No. 2, Vera Zvonareva. This tournament, recognized on the ITF Women’s Circuit, was held at the Habtoor Grand Resort.
Marcinko, who achieved a remarkable victory just last weekend at the inaugural Fujairah W75 Championships, demonstrated her skill and confidence on the court. Despite her relatively young age and limited experience, she dominated the match against the seasoned 41-year-old Zvonareva, securing the championship in straight sets.
Historically, the Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge began as a $25,000 event before transitioning to a $75,000 tournament from 1999 to 2015. In 2016, it was elevated to a $100,000+H event, reflecting its growing prominence in women’s tennis.
The prize distribution ceremony featured Khalaf Al Habtoor, Group Chairman of the Al Habtoor Group of Companies, alongside key figures from the UAE Tennis Federation, including Ahmed Abdul Malik and Nasser Al Marzooki, as well as Tournament Director Noura Badawi.
Marcinko’s success isn’t new to the region; she previously won consecutive tournaments in Fujairah and Dubai in 2019 while competing on the ITF Junior Circuit. Now, six years later, she is once again achieving remarkable milestones in these same locations.
Reflecting on her journey, Marcinko expressed her comfort with the environment, saying, “Maybe this place brings out the best in me.” She remained focused on her performance, aiming for a short break before gearing up for the 2026 season.
Sunday’s title capped off a fruitful 2025 season for Marcinko, which began with her first WTA 125 title at the ATV Tennis Open in Rome. She further distinguished herself with two tournament wins in the USA, including the Landisville and Tyler Challenges, and concluded the season with her victory in Fujairah and at the Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge.
Zvonareva, making her return to the WTA Tour, aimed to become only the second player to win both singles and doubles titles at this event. However, she and her partner Rada Zolotareva fell short in the doubles final. The duo faced off against Xinyu Gao and Mananchaya Sawangkaew, who made a remarkable comeback to secure the win with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.
