Ratan Tata’s stepmother, Simone Tata, has sadly passed away at the age of 95. Reports indicate that she died on December 5, 2025, after a brief illness while receiving treatment at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. The Tata Group confirmed her passing in an official statement.
Born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1930, Simone Tata played a significant role in shaping the Indian cosmetics industry. She is notably remembered as the driving force behind Lakmé, one of India’s premier cosmetic brands. Her legacy continues through her son Noel, her daughter-in-law Aloo, and her grandchildren.
Simone’s connection to the Tata family began when she married Naval H. Tata at the age of 25 in 1955. She joined the Tata Group in the 1960s, shortly after the brand Lakmé was established in response to then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s suggestion to create an Indian alternative to Western cosmetics. This initiative aimed to retain foreign currency spent on imports, ultimately benefiting the local economy.
As the brand’s managing director and later chairperson, Simone’s impact was profound. Under her leadership, Lakmé flourished, becoming a household name through innovative products featuring international formulations. Her vision and dedication significantly improved the brand’s popularity and market presence.
In 1966, Lakmé was sold to Hindustan Lever Limited, prompting Simone to take on new challenges within Trent, the Tata Group’s early retail chain. She was instrumental in launching Westside, a brand that revolutionized shopping culture in India.
Beyond her corporate success, Simone Tata was a prominent figure in philanthropy. She served as chairperson of the Sir Ratan Tata Institute and held key roles with organizations like Children of the World India and the India Foundation for the Arts.
As the Tata family navigates this difficult time, they are appreciated for their contributions to society and the business world. Simone Tata’s enduring legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
