Starc’s Dominance with Bat and Ball Leads Australia Nearing Gabba Victory

Mitchell Starc showcased his all-rounder potential during the third day of the second Ashes Test, scoring a crucial half-century and taking two wickets, driving Australia closer to victory at the Gabba. His 77 off 141 balls contributed to Australia’s commanding lead, putting them 177 runs ahead as England struggled to reach 134 for six at the end of the day.

Starc’s performance with the bat was instrumental, particularly as England found themselves in a precarious position, still needing 43 runs to avoid forcing Australia to bat again. Ben Stokes and Will Jacks, both not out on four runs, faced the daunting task of restoring some pride for an English side that has struggled against Australia for the past 15 years since their last Test victory on Australian soil.

The day began with England holding onto hope of containing Australia, who had a modest 44-run lead and four wickets remaining. However, the day ended in frustration as Australia amassed a total of 511 runs, dismantling the English batting order with alarming ease throughout the evening session.

Stokes is now confronting a challenging situation, with the team facing a 2-0 series deficit—an uphill battle to turn around, as only one team in Test cricket history has recovered from such a situation to win the series, a feat accomplished by Don Bradman’s Australian team in the 1936/37 Ashes.

In the evening session, England’s batting collapsed dramatically, losing 6 wickets for 89 runs in front of a crowd of 35,574. Following a promising start from openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who established a quick 45-run partnership, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Scott Boland and Michael Neser provided crucial breakthroughs, with Boland dismissing both Duckett and Harry Brook, while Neser picked up the key wickets of Crawley and Ollie Pope.

Additionally, Joe Root contributed to the chaos with a poorly timed shot that resulted in his dismissal to Starc. This performance has taken Starc’s tally to 18 wickets in just two matches of the series, solidifying his dual-threat status.

Starc’s earlier contributions with the bat included reaching his 11th Test fifty and combining with Boland for a record-setting partnership of 75 runs for the ninth wicket at the Gabba. He hit 13 boundaries during his innings, supporting his team effectively. Eventually, Starc’s innings came to an end when he attempted a risky slog, leading to a catch.

On that day, Australia scored 133 runs after resuming their innings at 378 for six, denying England a chance to bat under the safest conditions of daylight. Alex Carey notched up a valuable 63 runs, marking one of five half-centuries in Australia’s first innings.

From the English side, Brydon Carse ended with figures of 4 for 152, albeit conceding runs at over five per over. Coach Marcus Trescothick reflected on England’s batting strategies post-match, admitting inconsistencies. He noted that while the team has displayed dominance at times, poor shot selections have led to disappointing outcomes, saying, “It is what it is. You’ve got to have some way of trying to play the game.
