Veteran writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar recently expressed his strong condemnation of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s actions during a public event involving a female appointee. The incident, which has garnered significant media attention, involved Kumar removing the woman’s veil in a display that many consider disrespectful.
The controversial act occurred at the ‘Samvad’ event in Patna, where Nitish Kumar was handing out appointment letters. When a woman wearing a ‘naqab’ approached to receive her letter, he remarked on her attire and subsequently pulled off her veil, prompting a wave of critique across social media platforms.
In a statement on X, Akhtar emphasized his long-standing opposition to the traditional concept of ‘parda’, yet he unequivocally condemned Kumar’s behavior towards the woman. He stated, “Mr. Nitish Kumar owes an unconditional apology to the lady,” reinforcing the need for respect despite differing views on cultural practices.
The fallout from the Patna incident has not only ignited a political controversy within India but has also drawn criticism from various quarters, including voices from West Asian countries. Kumar is now facing backlash for perceived disrespect towards Muslim traditions and for overstepping boundaries of personal autonomy.
Akhtar further engaged with critics on social media who accused him of being selectively outraged by stating, “How dare you accuse me of selective outrage.” He called for a recognition of his consistent opposition to regressive attitudes within his own community and challenged detractors to point out instances where he portrayed female characters negatively in his work.
In previous discussions, Akhtar has articulated his views on women’s attire, arguing against stigmatization related to covering one’s face. During a literary festival in 2025, he responded to a question on the implications of veiling, asserting that it creates an unfortunate sense of shame about one’s appearance. He has publicly questioned what makes a covered face “vulgar” or “undignified,” attributing such pressures to societal norms rather than personal choices.
This incident highlights crucial conversations around personal freedom, respect, and cultural identity, subjects that remain deeply relevant in contemporary discourse.
