Legendary fast bowler Waqar Younis has praised the remarkable development of the DP World ILT20 league and its significant impact on cricket in the Gulf region. During a recent media interaction in Dubai, the former Pakistan captain shared his insights on the league, which has seen impressive growth since its launch in 2023.
Younis emphasized that the league has matured exceptionally fast, noting that while many cricket leagues take years to establish, the DP World ILT20 has made significant strides in just a few seasons. He expressed confidence in the inclusion of players from countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, highlighting that increased participation will be crucial for the sport’s growth in the region.
The Pakistani cricket icon also spotlighted emerging talent, specifically praising Khuzaima Tanveer, an all-rounder for the Desert Vipers and UAE international. Tanveer recently achieved a remarkable bowling performance, taking 4 wickets for just 10 runs against the Gulf Giants, marking the best bowling figures by a UAE player in DP World ILT20 history. Younis noted Tanveer’s understanding of bowling techniques and his dual skill set as a batsman, describing him as a game-changing all-rounder.
In addition to Tanveer, Waqar Younis mentioned other promising players, such as Ajay Kumar from the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and batter Alishan Sharafu. He acknowledged that while these players require further development and experience in the T20 format, their potential is evident.
Regarding international players, Younis commented on Naseem Shah of the Desert Vipers. He recognized Shah’s talent but pointed out the fluctuations in his performance. The league provides him with a platform to showcase his abilities and attract attention from selectors.
As the DP World ILT20 continues to evolve, it plays a critical role in shaping the future of cricket in the Gulf, with a focus on nurturing homegrown talent and attracting participants from various nations.
