The Desert Vipers cricket team is set to host its annual Sustainability Match on December 14 at the Dubai International Stadium. This event not only emphasizes their commitment to environmental stewardship but also introduces an innovative jersey designed specifically for this occasion.
The jersey, inspired by Professor Miles Richardson from the University of Derby, features the ‘Biodiversity Stripes’. These stripes depict the fluctuation of global wildlife populations over time, with vibrant green representing healthy populations, transitioning to grey as biodiversity diminishes. The design aims to raise awareness of the alarming 73% decline in wildlife over the last five decades, linking the health of ecosystems to sports and recreation.
Produced in the UAE from 100% recycled materials by the team’s kit partners, PALMFIT, the jersey will eventually be transformed into a piece of artwork. Phil Oliver, CEO of Desert Vipers, expressed pride in the team’s sustainability efforts. He believes this unique kit will draw attention to the need for action against biodiversity loss, stating, “Cricket and nature are inherently connected, and at Desert Vipers, we want to be proactive in playing for people and the planet.”
Professor Richardson highlighted the significance of the jersey, saying the Global Biodiversity Stripes visually communicate the ongoing loss of biodiversity since 1970. He hopes that this initiative will inspire viewers to appreciate nature’s beauty and engage in its preservation.
Jana Janotova, a Senior Programme Coordinator at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, commended the Desert Vipers for using their platform to raise awareness about environmental issues. The club’s ongoing initiatives extend beyond the match, as they continually seek innovative ways to minimize their environmental impact during cricket events.
On match day, the Crickmas fan zone at Dubai International Stadium will be filled with engaging activities aimed at educating fans about nature conservation. The Desert Vipers plan to collaborate with various partners to provide unique experiences for visitors.
Middlesex University Dubai will distribute upcycled giveaways made from last season’s kits, while Bright Bites will offer healthy snacks to younger fans. In a creative twist, RAW Coffee Company will host a cycle-to-charge activation, allowing visitors to generate power through pedaling.
Additionally, the Vipers’ coaching staff will lead cricket training sessions and sustainability-themed mini-games, reinforcing the team’s commitment to community involvement and nurturing local talent. The Desert Vipers are also notable for being the first cricket franchise to publicly document their carbon footprint, achieving a 20% reduction since the debut season of the DP World ILT20.
As the Sustainability Match approaches, the Desert Vipers continue to exemplify their unwavering dedication to the environment, blending sportsmanship with ecological consciousness.
