Murphy Steps In for Lyon as Cummins Exits Remaining Ashes Matches

Australia’s cricket team is facing significant changes as they prepare for the fourth Test of the Ashes series. Spinner Todd Murphy has been added to the squad following Nathan Lyon’s injury, which has ruled him out for the remainder of the series. Captain Pat Cummins will also miss the rest of the matches due to ongoing back issues.

Lyon’s departure comes after he sustained a hamstring injury during the third Test, where Australia secured an 82-run victory against England in Adelaide, clinching the Ashes. Despite missing the previous match due to vertigo, Steve Smith will step in as captain for this Test, mirroring his role in the earlier games of the series.

Cummins, who delivered a strong performance with six wickets in Adelaide, is currently on a recovery path. His absence raises questions about who will fill his position in the bowling lineup, with Brendan Doggett and Michael Neser among potential replacements, both of whom have contributed to the team during the series.

Australia’s coach, Andrew McDonald, confirmed that Cummins would not be participating in the remainder of the series, emphasizing the team’s goal of not risking his long-term health. The decision comes after the team’s successful campaign so far, prioritizing player well-being.

Additionally, Jhye Richardson, who recently returned from shoulder surgery, has also been called up to provide more pace options. Murphy, aged 25, has been regarded as Lyon’s successor and has so far played seven Tests since debuting in India in 2023.

All-rounder Beau Webster, yet to play in this series, offers a part-time spinning option, which could influence the team’s strategy going into the Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday. McDonald acknowledged the importance of Murphy’s experience, as he played in the last Ashes series and is believed to be performing at his best.

McDonald also shared insight into Lyon’s emotional state following his surgery, noting that the veteran cricketer is keen on making a comeback, particularly for the upcoming tour of India in early 2027. The challenges ahead are daunting for Lyon, but his determination remains strong.

Usman Khawaja retains his spot in the squad despite experiencing a drop earlier in the series, further highlighting the fluid dynamics of team selection.

The squad for the upcoming fourth Test includes: Steve Smith (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, and Beau Webster.
