Telugu actor Sivaji recently appeared before the Telangana State Commission for Women following his controversial remarks made during a film event. The inquiry was initiated after he made comments regarding women’s clothing, which were deemed inappropriate.
During the session, Sivaji expressed remorse for his statements and acknowledged his errors. According to the Commission, he fully retracted his earlier comments, committing to a future of treating women with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Nerella Sharada, Chairperson of the Commission, challenged Sivaji on his justification of harassment based on women’s attire. This line of questioning highlighted broader concerns about accountability and societal attitudes towards women’s safety.
Sivaji’s controversial remarks were made during a speech at the film ‘Dhandora’ event on December 22. In a subsequent video posted on social media, he admitted to inadvertently using “unparliamentary” language, which raised concerns regarding his statements. He clarified that his comments were intended to offer advice specifically to actresses on how to present themselves in public, especially in light of recent incidents where female actors faced harassment.
The Commission noted that the focus on women’s attire during public events diverts attention from the essential responsibility of event organizers to ensure women’s safety. They emphasized the negative impact such remarks can have on society and women’s dignity.
In its release, the Commission advocated for filmmakers to portray women’s roles and costumes responsibly. Additionally, they urged event organizers to implement necessary measures to safeguard the well-being of women artists during promotions and public appearances. This incident reflects ongoing discussions about the treatment of women in the film industry and the importance of creating a secure environment for all.
