Morocco’s national team is focusing on the recovery of star player Achraf Hakimi as they navigate the Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Walid Regragui emphasized the importance of being cautious with Hakimi, who is still recuperating from an ankle injury.
Ahead of Morocco’s opening match against Comoros, Regragui indicated that Hakimi was nearing fitness. Nevertheless, the Paris Saint-Germain full-back did not participate in the 2-0 victory played in Rabat. Instead, Noussair Mazraoui, who plays for Manchester United, filled the right-back position.
Regragui acknowledged Hakimi’s significant impact on the team, describing him as “the best player in Africa.” He expressed confidence in Mazraoui’s abilities, recognizing the different skill sets both players bring to the game. The coach reflected on the need to protect Hakimi’s health, stating that they would evaluate his condition over the next two days to determine his availability for the upcoming match against Mali.
Morocco’s win against Comoros marked another milestone, extending their record-winning streak to 19 matches. The tournament opener saw Brahim Diaz scoring a goal, assisted by Mazraoui, and Ayoub El Kaabi adding another. Prior to these goals, Soufiane Rahimi’s penalty attempt was saved.
While celebrating the victory, Regragui cautioned against complacency, noting that the forthcoming game against Mali will present a formidable challenge given their top-tier talent. He highlighted the likelihood of less possession in that match, framing it as a critical test for the team.
On the other hand, Comoros coach Stefano Cusin reflected positively on his team’s performance despite the loss. He praised their tactical organization and defensive solidity against a strong opponent. Cusin expressed pride in his players, particularly given their youth, asserting that their effort against Morocco made a favorable impression.
He acknowledged Morocco’s superiority, correctly labeling them as the leading team in Africa and one of the best globally. For Cusin, there was no shame in losing to such a prominent opponent, reiterating respect for Morocco’s status in the footballing world.
