Aditya Dhar’s film “Dhurandhar” explores the tumultuous landscape of gang violence in Lyari, Karachi, during the early 2000s. Starring Akshaye Khanna as the notorious gangster Rehman Dakait, the film intertwines fiction with elements drawn from real-life events, prompting discussions about its portrayal of historical figures.
In a recent interview, Habib Jan Baloch, a friend of the real Rehman Dakait, shared his thoughts on the movie. Speaking on camera, Baloch indicated that he appreciated Bollywood’s effort in presenting his friend’s story, stating, “What Pakistan did not do, India’s Bollywood did. Thank you, Bollywood!” He has watched the film twice and suggested that although it could have benefitted from a few more songs, he recognized its efforts in telling a significant narrative.
Baloch insisted that Rehman should not be viewed as a villain, but rather as a hero. He asserted, “He was a hero, a good man. Pakistan is indebted to him.” Referring to Rehman and fellow gangster Uzair Baloch, he expressed that without their influence, Pakistan might have faced an even harsher reality. Baloch also emphasized his belief that the film does not take sides against any political party, despite backlash from members of the Pakistan People’s Party who feel the film casts them in a negative light.
“Dhurandhar,” which also features Ranveer Singh as an Indian spy infiltrating Dakait’s gang, has enjoyed significant commercial success, grossing over ₹1000 crore worldwide. The film portrays a gritty narrative, with Sanjay Dutt playing SP Aslam, who led the Lyari Task Force. R. Madhavan and Arjun Rampal also play significant roles, enhancing the film’s appeal.
The movie’s reception has sparked interest and discussions regarding its real-life inspirations and the impact of its storytelling. With its blend of action, drama, and history, “Dhurandhar” continues to resonate with audiences, establishing itself as a noteworthy entry in Bollywood’s filmography on organized crime.
