Nancy’s Relationship Choices in Stranger Things: What Happened with Steve and Jonathan

As “Stranger Things” approaches its concluding chapter, fans have been keenly observing the status of Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers. With the release of Season 5, Volume 2, Netflix Tudum and the show’s creators offer insights into the couple’s dynamics and Nancy’s forthcoming path.

The unresolved tension that began in Season 4 escalates dramatically in Episode 7. A pivotal moment arises when Nancy fires a shot that disrupts a mysterious sphere, leading to the duo becoming trapped in a room inundated with gray sludge. This harrowing situation necessitates a brutally honest conversation between them.

Director Shawn Levy, who directed Episodes 6 and 7, highlighted the significance of the moment, stating that the characters genuinely believe they may die. This urgency facilitates an exchange that Levy describes as one of the most emotionally raw scenes for the Jonathan-Nancy duo throughout the series. During this dialogue, Jonathan reveals that he never applied to Emerson College, while Nancy admits her reluctance to visit him in California was due to her need for emotional distance. Jonathan ultimately discloses that he has been carrying an engagement ring concealed inside a John Coltrane cassette, presenting what he terms an “un-proposal,” emphasizing that marriage won’t resolve their issues.

Despite their survival from the sludge predicament, their relationship seems to reach its conclusion. As confirmed by Netflix Tudum, while Nancy and Jonathan escape physically, their romance effectively ends at this juncture.

In the face of ongoing speculation regarding Nancy’s potential reconciliation with Steve Harrington, Season 5, Volume 2 does not depict Nancy making a romantic choice for Steve. There is no definitive evidence suggesting that she ends up with him by the conclusion of the season. As the storyline progresses towards a final showdown with Vecna, Nancy remains single.

While the characters’ onscreen narrative appears to close, the actors, Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer, continue their real-life relationship. Heaton recently shared his thoughts about collaborating with Dyer, describing the experience as “precious.” Reflecting on the emotional weight of filming the final season, Heaton characterized some of the closing scenes as among the most authentic of his career, expressing a sentiment that such experiences might be irreplaceable.

“Stranger Things” Season 5 is being released in a three-part format. Volume 1 debuted on November 26, Volume 2 was released on December 25, and the series finale is slated for December 31. This final stretch is set to deliver high-stakes drama as the beloved series wraps up its narrative arc.
