Tyler Perry, the acclaimed filmmaker and studio executive, is facing a lawsuit filed by Mario Rodriguez, an actor from “Boo! A Madea Halloween.” This marks the second instance in recent months where Perry has been accused of sexual misconduct, raising serious concerns about the industry’s response to such allegations.
Rodriguez filed his lawsuit in California, alleging that Perry made repeated unwanted sexual advances towards him over several years. He claims these incidents included acts of sexual battery and assault at Perry’s Los Angeles residence. The actor is pursuing damages amounting to at least $77 million and has also named Lionsgate, the studio that distributed the film, citing their negligence in addressing Perry’s alleged behavior.
In response to the allegations, Perry’s legal team has categorically denied the claims. Rodriguez alleges that in 2014, a trainer at an Equinox gym informed him that Perry was interested in discussing an acting opportunity. Subsequently, Perry encouraged him to audition for “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” asserting that he would be beneficial to know in the industry.
According to the lawsuit, after being cast in the film, Rodriguez was invited to Perry’s home, where he claims Perry touched him inappropriately during a movie screening. The suit notes further incidents occurring in 2016, 2018, and 2019, with allegations of Perry attempting to unbuckle Rodriguez’s pants and forcing Rodriguez to touch him inappropriately. Post-encounter, Rodriguez alleges that Perry gave him $5,000 multiple times.
Feeling compelled to take action, Rodriguez filed his suit after hearing about similar claims made by another actor, Derek Dixon. Dixon alleged that Perry groped him while he was working on Perry’s TV series, “The Oval” and “Ruthless.” Dixon’s lawsuit, initially filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, has since moved to federal court in Georgia, closer to Perry’s studio.
Rodriguez’s lawsuit outlines claims of sexual assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, contributing to an ongoing discourse about power dynamics and accountability within Hollywood. As this case unfolds, it highlights the critical need for transparency and reform in the entertainment industry.
