Lokesh Kanagaraj, the director of the recent film Coolie, starring the iconic Rajinikanth, has openly accepted criticisms regarding the film’s reception. Released on August 14, Coolie garnered mixed reviews, with many viewers expressing disappointment over its script and writing quality, despite significant box office success.
Addressing the audience at a recent event, Kanagaraj acknowledged the multitude of criticisms directed toward the film. He expressed gratitude toward fans for their support, highlighting that Coolie still managed to collect over ₹500 crore. He remarked, “Even with those criticisms, people watched the film for Rajinikanth sir. Thanks to everyone.” This shows his awareness of the challenges faced during the production and the resultant audience feedback.
In addition to his remarks at the event, Kanagaraj attended a conclave in Coimbatore where he elaborated on his approach to filmmaking. He emphasized that he does not write stories based on the heightened expectations of others. “I can only write what I can, and hope the audience will like it. If it meets their expectations, I’m good. If it doesn’t, I will try—that’s it,” he stated. This perspective illustrates his intention to remain authentic to his creative process rather than conforming to external pressures.
The film itself features a robust cast, including not only Rajinikanth but also notable actors like Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Rachita Ram, Upendra, and Aamir Khan. The storyline centers around Deva, played by Rajinikanth, a former coolie union leader investigating the mysterious death of his friend Rajasekhar. In his quest for answers, Deva confronts gangster Simon and his lieutenant, Dayal.
Despite facing tough competition from War 2 at the box office, Coolie has managed to capture audience attention, crossing the ₹500 crore mark worldwide. The film’s plot explores themes of mystery and revenge, showcasing Rajinikanth’s character navigating the challenges posed by powerful adversaries.
Kanagaraj’s acknowledgment of the film’s criticisms, paired with the box office achievements, highlights the complex relationship between audience expectations and creative storytelling in the film industry. Moving forward, he aims to integrate the feedback received into his upcoming projects to continue growing as a filmmaker.
