When it comes to the demanding world of endurance riding, determination often triumphs over reputation. This was exemplified on Saturday at the Dubai International Endurance City, where two Emirati women redefined the expectations of one of the sport’s most challenging competitions.
Hamda Jasim Ahmed Mohamed Al Ali and Maitha Mohamed Al Qubaisi delivered an impressive performance, finishing first and second in the flagship 160 km ride of the His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Festival. Their success came against a competitive field of elite male and female riders, showcasing their skill and strategic thinking throughout the event.
Hamda led the charge, achieving a remarkable victory that resonated well past the finish line at the state-of-the-art facility in Seih Al Salam. Competing for Al Bawadi Stables, she exemplified patience, discipline, and composure, earning one of the most prestigious wins of her career in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose patronage has been pivotal in promoting endurance riding in the UAE.
The victory was particularly significant as Sheikh Mohammed, a former World Endurance Champion himself, witnessed Hamda’s triumphant finish, adding weight to the event’s proceedings and highlighting its importance in the endurance riding calendar. Hamda expressed her sentiments, stating, “This win means everything to me.” She acknowledged the honor of competing alongside respected riders while being celebrated by a figure who has inspired generations in the sport.
Endurance riding, as Hamda articulated, instills valuable qualities such as humility and belief. Starting in 24th place, she demonstrated tactical intelligence and restraint, allowing her strategy to evolve as the race progressed. By the fifth phase, she had moved into tenth place, preparing for an intense final stretch without exhausting her horse or sacrificing health metrics crucial for success in endurance events.
Her calculated strategy paid off, and she crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 6 hours, 14 minutes, and 19 seconds, reaching an average speed of 25.65 km/h. This triumph not only establishes a personal milestone for Hamda but also marks a significant highlight in the festival’s history.
Close behind her, at just 36 seconds later, was Maitha Mohamed Al Qubaisi, riding Casino for F3 Stables. Maitha’s performance further showcased the emerging talent among Emirati women in the endurance circuit. Completing the podium was Mansour Saeed Al Farsi, who took third place with Tatarinu.
Together, Hamda and Maitha’s achievements illustrate the exceptional growth of female competitors in endurance riding. Their one-two finish is a testament to their dedication, advanced horsemanship, and deep appreciation of the arduous desert terrain.
