Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has expressed his respect for the Indian selectors’ decision to drop him from the T20 World Cup squad. He referred to this unexpected turn of events as an aspect of “destiny.”
The 26-year-old batsman is set to lead the one-day team in a three-match series against New Zealand, which begins in Vadodara. This series comes ahead of a five-match T20 series, during which many players will be preparing for the T20 World Cup.
Gill’s omission from the T20 squad surprised many, especially after he managed to score just 291 runs in his last 15 matches in this format, averaging 24.25. Despite this setback, Gill remains philosophical about his circumstances.
In a recent statement, he emphasized his belief that he is where he needs to be, affirming, “Whatever is written in my destiny, I will have it.” He also expressed his desire to win games for his team while wishing success to the T20 squad.
India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, heads into the T20 World Cup as defending champions. The tournament is scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2024.
As the focus shifts to the upcoming ODI matches against New Zealand, the performances of seasoned players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be under scrutiny. Both players have transitioned to focusing solely on ODIs following their retirements from T20 international cricket after the World Cup win in 2024.
Gill acknowledged the importance of Kohli and Rohit in the team dynamic, noting their invaluable experience. He stated, “Definitely when you have these two people in your team, it makes your life a lot easier.” Their insights and past experiences in challenging situations provide crucial support for any captain.
Currently, both Kohli and Rohit are enjoying significant success in international and domestic cricket, consistently scoring runs and achieving centuries. Their performances reflect a resurgence, adding depth to India’s batting line-up as they prepare for the series against New Zealand.
