Sridhar Vembu’s Divorce Proceedings Could Cost Him ₹15,000 Crore

Sridhar Vembu, co-founder of Zoho Corporation, finds himself embroiled in a high-profile divorce from his wife, Pramila Srinivasan. This upheaval comes after a 29-year marriage and has made headlines, particularly due to the substantial financial implications of the case currently being adjudicated in California.

The latest developments indicate that a court has mandated Vembu to post a bond of USD 1.7 billion, roughly equating to Rs. 15,278 crore. This bond requirement is indicative of the contested proceedings, which not only cover divorce terms but also delve into complexities surrounding child custody and entitlement to the assets amassed throughout their marriage.

During their time together, Vembu and Srinivasan built a family and shared experiences in California, where they lived for almost three decades. They are parents to a 26-year-old son, who has been diagnosed with autism. The divorce proceedings reportedly commenced after Vembu expressed his desire to separate while he was in India, establishing the foundations for Zoho.

Court documents reveal accusations from Srinivasan, alleging that Vembu ‘abandoned’ her and their son after relocating to India. Reports suggest that Vembu informed her of his decision to divorce via a WhatsApp message in November 2020. Subsequently, the divorce application was filed in August 2021, marking a significant turning point in their relationship.

Srinivasan, who also has a professional background as an entrepreneur, has taken substantial steps to ensure their child’s well-being. In 2019, she founded The Brain Foundation, a nonprofit aimed at supporting research and treatment for autism, reflecting her commitment to advocacy in healthcare technology.

The ongoing divorce saga raises questions about the considerable stakes involved for both parties, especially concerning asset division and custody arrangements. The implications of the court’s decisions will undoubtedly have long-lasting effects not only on their personal lives but also on the business landscape surrounding Zoho.

This case serves as a striking reminder of how personal matters can intersect with public interest, especially for individuals of considerable means in the technology sector. The outcome of this high-stakes divorce remains to be seen as both Vembu and Srinivasan navigate through these challenging times.
