Jonathan Ross: The ICE Agent Involved in the Fatal Shooting of Renee Good

Minneapolis is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman, raising significant national concerns about the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The episode, which unfolded during a routine immigration enforcement operation on January 7, 2026, escalated to a shooting involving Renee Nicole Good, igniting protests and calls for greater government accountability.

Jonathan Ross, the ICE officer involved, has served for over a decade in federal immigration enforcement, primarily in ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. As a member of the Special Response Team, he is recognized as an expert marksman with extensive training. However, little information about his professional history has been made publicly available, with ICE declining to confirm his identity initially. The Minnesota Star Tribune obtained his name through court documents and sources within law enforcement, highlighting a discrepancy in transparency laws for federal agents compared to their local counterparts, which intensified public outrage.

The scrutiny on Ross heightened following revelations about an earlier incident in June 2025, where he sustained serious injuries during an enforcement action in Bloomington, Minnesota. Court documents reveal that he was dragged nearly 300 feet by a fleeing suspect’s vehicle, leading to significant injuries that required over 30 stitches. This incident has been cited by officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Vice President JD Vance, as a context for understanding Ross’s heightened response during the shooting, with Vance asserting that it may have influenced Ross’s actions on January 7.

On that fateful morning, Ross participated in an ICE operation in South Minneapolis, which culminated in him firing multiple shots into a vehicle driven by Renee Nicole Good, who was a mother of three. The shooting resulted in her injuries, from which she later succumbed. Federal officials contended that Ross acted in self-defense, claiming that Good attempted to use her vehicle to strike the agents. However, local officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have expressed skepticism regarding this narrative. They pointed to bystander video evidence suggesting that Good’s car was turning away when shots were fired.

As public attention remains fixated on the incident, the FBI has taken over the investigation, and Ross has not yet been charged with any crimes related to the shooting. The series of events has ignited discussions over the use of force by federal agents and the need for increased transparency and accountability in law enforcement practices. Consequently, the situation continues to evolve as communities seek justice and clarity surrounding this tragic occurrence.
