Bangladesh and ICC Clash Over T20 World Cup Matches in India

Bangladesh has expressed its refusal to accept what they characterize as “unreasonable conditions” from the International Cricket Council (ICC) related to their participation in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India. This stance was articulated by Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul amid ongoing discussions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and ICC officials.

Concerns escalated following the decision to exclude key player Mustafizur Rahman from the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This led the BCB to indicate that the team would withdraw from the World Cup under the present conditions, prompting uncertainty about their involvement in the tournament.

Despite multiple negotiations, a consensus has remained elusive. Nazrul stated that if the ICC yields to pressures from the Indian cricket board and enforces unreasonable stipulations, Bangladesh would not comply. He cited a precedent where the ICC changed a venue in response to India’s refusal to play in Pakistan.

The BCB had previously denied reports that the ICC set a January 21 deadline for their decision on World Cup participation. Contrary to those claims, Amjad Hossain, the media committee chairman, insisted that no specific date for a decision had been established.

According to ICC sources, however, a final decision from the BCB regarding the team’s participation was indeed expected by January 21. Should the BCB choose not to send their team, the ICC would likely appoint a replacement, with Scotland being a candidate based on current rankings. The T20 World Cup is slated to commence on February 7.

In recent media interactions, Amjad addressed discussions held with an ICC representative, emphasizing their concerns over the playing venue and advocacy for an alternate site. The BCB has sought clarity on their request and indicated that the ICC had yet to provide a definitive timeline for further discussions.

Meanwhile, the ICC remains steadfast on the original schedule, with Bangladesh placed in Group C alongside Italy, New Zealand, West Indies, and Nepal. As the opening match against the West Indies approaches in just three weeks, discussions remain ongoing with no resolution in sight.

Bangladesh’s group-stage matches are scheduled to take place at Kolkata’s renowned Eden Gardens, with an additional game in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. The discussions on Saturday also revealed that the ICC would not facilitate a group swap between Bangladesh and Ireland, which would have shifted Bangladesh’s games to Sri Lanka.

Regarding security concerns, the ICC has assured the BCB of the safety of the Bangladesh team in India. Independent risk assessments conducted by recognized security experts have concluded that the risk level for Bangladesh playing their scheduled matches in India ranges from low to moderate, which aligns with the assessments of many significant international sporting events.
