New Zealand’s cricket team is facing challenges as they prepare for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup, which is set to take place in India and Sri Lanka starting February 7. Injuries have struck key players, impacting their readiness for the tournament.
Fast bowler Adam Milne sustained a left hamstring injury while playing for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is currently evaluating his condition following the incident. Meanwhile, all-rounder Michael Bracewell has also been sidelined due to a left calf strain, which occurred during the third one-day international against India in Indore.
NZC has announced that Bracewell will receive treatment and will be monitored over the next few days to determine whether he can continue participating in the tour. In light of these injuries, all-rounder Kristian Clarke has been called up to the squad as a replacement for the first three T20 Internationals against India, which kick off on Wednesday.
Coach Rob Walter acknowledged the ongoing adjustments within the squad, highlighting players returning from injury as well as those transitioning from their respective franchise commitments. He emphasized the importance of having sufficient pace-bowling options for the initial matches and noted that this tour presents a valuable opportunity for Clarke, especially considering his impressive performance during the ODI series.
Clarke’s ability to maintain composure and showcase his skills under pressure has not gone unnoticed, adding depth to the team as they prepare for the challenges ahead. New Zealand’s World Cup journey will commence in Group D against Afghanistan, with their first match scheduled for February 8 in Chennai.
