ICC Denies Bangladesh’s Request to Move T20 World Cup Games from India

Cricket’s governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), has rejected Bangladesh’s request to relocate their T20 World Cup matches from India. This decision raises concerns about the team’s participation in the tournament scheduled to begin on February 7.

The T20 World Cup matches for Bangladesh are set to take place in Kolkata and Mumbai. Despite repeated protests from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) regarding safety concerns, the ICC has maintained its stance, citing a lack of independent security findings that violate team safety protocols.

The controversy began on January 3 when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. Following this, the BCB sought to move their matches to Sri Lanka, a co-host of the World Cup. As of now, there is no confirmation regarding whether Bangladesh will comply with the ICC’s decision.

The ICC emphasized their commitment to dialogue with the BCB to facilitate Bangladesh’s participation, yet these discussions were reportedly dismissed. They provided assurances that independent security assessments showed no credible threats to the team’s safety.

Bangladesh’s Youth and Sports Adviser, Asif Nazrul, reiterated the government’s position, stating they will not be compelled to play in India. Captain Litton Das also expressed uncertainty regarding the team’s involvement, reflecting that the entire country shares this uncertainty about their World Cup prospects.

Reports suggest that Sri Lanka has yet to be approached about hosting Bangladesh’s matches. Meanwhile, ICC sources indicated that Scotland could potentially replace Bangladesh, given that they are the highest-ranked team not qualifying for the tournament.

The backdrop to this situation includes ongoing political tensions between India and Bangladesh, which have escalated following the political upheaval in Bangladesh in 2024, resulting in the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. These developments have further complicated the relationship between the neighboring countries during this crucial sporting event.
