Neeraj Ghaywan’s film “Homebound” has been officially shortlisted for the 98th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. This announcement has sparked excitement as the film, produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Entertainment, seeks a nomination in a prestigious global arena. Ghaywan has acknowledged the celebratory moment, while also confronting the reality of the costly Oscar campaign, describing it at times as a “bottomless pit.” Johar emphasized that the film was driven by passion and not commercial motives.
In a recent YouTube podcast on PeepingMoon and Telly MEK, Karan Johar discussed the film’s journey to the Oscars shortlist. He revealed that his business partner, Adar Poonawalla, facilitated an extensive Oscar campaign without reservation about the expenses. According to Johar, they viewed this campaign as a valuable opportunity rather than a mere financial gamble.
He explained the inherent challenges of campaigning for an Oscar, citing the need for publicists, overseas travel, and media engagement. Despite the unpredictable financial outcomes, Poonawalla urged a focus on the film’s artistic merit. Johar stated that their approach prioritized passion over profits, with “Homebound” representing a labor of love rather than a commercial venture.
“Homebound” follows the intertwined lives of childhood friends Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan (Vishal Jethwa), who aspire to join the police force, with Janhvi Kapoor co-starring. The film draws inspiration from journalist Basharat Peer’s article “Taking Amrit Home,” which poignantly explores themes of friendship and loss against the backdrop of a pandemic.
The final nominees for the Academy Awards will be revealed on January 22, 2026. The ceremony itself is set to take place on March 15, with comedian Conan O’Brien returning as the host. With its compelling narrative and notable casting, “Homebound” aims to make a significant impact in the competitive landscape of international cinema.
