The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is making a final attempt to secure the national team’s participation in next month’s Twenty20 World Cup, following the rejection of their request to shift matches outside India. Concerns regarding safety and security, particularly in light of the current political tensions between India and Bangladesh, have prompted the BCB to approach the interim government for support.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has dismissed Bangladesh’s safety concerns, stating that the matches will proceed as planned in India. After the board declined their request to play in Sri Lanka, the BCB is faced with the challenging decision of either accepting the situation or risking replacement by another team in the tournament starting on February 7.
BCB president Aminul Islam confirmed that he sought additional time from the ICC to discuss the matter with the government, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. He expressed his hope that the government would provide feedback that could influence the ICC’s position. The ICC acknowledged the BCB’s concerns and has given them 24 to 48 hours to respond.
Despite the challenges, Aminul mentioned that the players are eager to participate in the World Cup, and he hopes for a favorable outcome. “If we change our stance about playing in India, we might face backlash, but our players are passionate about the World Cup,” he noted. He reiterated that safety remains a significant issue for the team, asserting that playing in Sri Lanka is the preferred alternative.
Political relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained, affecting various aspects, including cricket. For instance, Bangladeshi player Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the Indian Premier League (IPL) roster this year, despite being signed with a Kolkata franchise. This led to Bangladesh’s decision to ban IPL broadcasts within the country and further advocate for World Cup matches to be held in Sri Lanka.
As the tournament approaches, tensions continue to simmer in the background, making the BCB’s next steps crucial for the future of their participation in this major cricket event.
