Kathleen Kennedy is set to retire from her role as president of Lucasfilm, the company behind the “Star Wars” franchise, as announced by Walt Disney. This marks the end of an era for Kennedy, who has helmed Lucasfilm since Disney’s acquisition in 2012.

Dave Filoni, renowned for co-creating “The Mandalorian,” will take on the position of president and chief creative officer. His appointment reflects Disney’s strategic pivot toward both television and film endeavors within the iconic franchise. Filoni, a protégé of “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, will work alongside Lynwen Brennan, who manages the studio’s business operations.

During Kennedy’s tenure, she oversaw the release of significant films in the franchise, including three sequels to the original trilogy and the successful standalone movie “Rogue One.” However, the 2018 release “Solo,” featuring a new portrayal of the beloved character Han Solo, did not perform well at the box office, prompting Disney to reassess its film strategy.

In 2019, Disney placed “Star Wars” theatrical releases on hold to concentrate on developing live-action series, notably “The Mandalorian,” which has garnered a massive following thanks to its storytelling and characters, including the widely popular Baby Yoda. The company also canceled planned films from directors Patty Jenkins and Rian Johnson in a move that reflected a broader restructuring effort.

Filoni has played a key role in the success of “The Mandalorian” and other animated series such as “Ahsoka.” His deep familiarity with the “Star Wars” universe, cultivated under George Lucas, positions him well to guide the franchise moving forward. The “Star Wars” franchise has generated over $10.3 billion in global box office revenue, underscoring its significance in cinematic history.

Kathleen Kennedy was personally selected by Lucas to lead Lucasfilm, and under her guidance, the franchise’s five films grossed approximately $5.9 billion. The peak of her tenure came with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which earned over $2 billion worldwide.

Moreover, Kennedy was instrumental in expanding Lucasfilm’s presence into live-action streaming series, pioneering projects like “The Mandalorian,” which debuted with Disney’s streaming service in 2019. The franchise has also seen major expansions at Disney parks, including Star Wars-themed attractions in Florida and California.

Dave Filoni’s history with “Star Wars” began in 2005 when Lucas entrusted him with establishing an animation studio. Filoni is celebrated for creating the acclaimed animated series “The Clone Wars,” and he remains a familiar figure at fan events and Hollywood premieres.

Looking ahead, “The Mandalorian” will transition to the big screen with an upcoming film slated for release in May, co-written by Filoni. Additionally, a new “Star Wars” film, “Starfighter,” featuring Ryan Gosling, is expected to hit theaters in May 2027, with Kennedy continuing to play a role as a producer.

The film landscape for “Star Wars” remains vibrant, with returning stars like Daisy Ridley hinting at further expansion of the universe in new projects. The future of the franchise under Filoni’s leadership is highly anticipated by fans and industry observers alike.
