Pakistan and Australia are set to clash in a three-match Twenty20 international series beginning in Lahore on Thursday. This series comes amid ongoing uncertainty regarding Pakistan’s participation in next month’s World Cup, scheduled for February.
The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Mohsin Naqvi, is expected to make an announcement regarding the team’s participation by the end of the week. Pakistan has raised concerns following the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) recent decision, which denied Bangladesh’s request to move their matches out of India due to security issues.
Bangladesh has been replaced by Scotland for the upcoming World Cup, which will take place from February 7 to March 8, co-hosted by Sri Lanka. Despite these developments, Pakistan is focused on their series against Australia as a vital preparation step for the World Cup.
Captain Salman Agha emphasized the significance of the upcoming matches in assessing their readiness for the World Cup. He stated, “These three games will give us an idea how prepared we are for the World Cup. Australia is a top team and will give us the best final preparations.”
In the World Cup, Pakistan is positioned in Group A alongside formidable opponents such as India, the United States, Namibia, and the Netherlands. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan’s leading bowler, has regained full fitness after recovering from a recent knee injury sustained during the Big Bash League.
Agha highlighted the importance of this series in fine-tuning their strategy and performance, saying, “We need to see how many boxes we tick in the series which are important for the World Cup as we aim to do well and win the Cup.”
The Australian team, captained by Mitchell Marsh, arrived in Lahore on Wednesday with a 17-member squad. However, they will be missing key players Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Tim David, and Nathan Ellis due to injuries, while allrounder Glenn Maxwell has been rested to manage his workload.
Despite these absences, Marsh remains confident in his team’s preparedness for the upcoming World Cup. “These are very important times in both teams’ preparations for the World Cup,” he noted. The Australian squad will compete in Group B, facing strong teams like Sri Lanka, Oman, Ireland, and Zimbabwe.
