The Malayalam film “Sarvam Maya” has garnered significant attention following its successful theatrical release and subsequent availability on OTT platforms. Directed by Akhil Sathyan, the film features a budget of Rs. 30 crore and has impressively earned Rs. 149.07 crore worldwide. Starring Nivin Pauly, Riya Shibu, Vineeth, and Methil Devika, it was released in theaters on December 25, 2025, and can now be streamed on Jio Hotstar. A notable aspect of the film is its connection to real-life events, which adds depth to its narrative.

Akhil Sathyan revealed in an interview that “Sarvam Maya” draws inspiration from a true story. The plot follows a ghost named ‘Delulu’, also known as ‘Maya Mathew’, whose journey culminates in liberation. The emotional core of the film revolves around a poignant goodbye scene between Maya and her brother, which reflects a tragic real-life situation where a family member was faced with making an agonizing decision regarding life support for a loved one. Akhil recounted how this deeply personal experience influenced his storytelling.

He noted that his approach to writing comes from real-life interactions and occurrences. Sathyan’s tendency to weave genuine experiences into his screenplay sets his work apart, revealing the significant emotional weight behind the plot.

The film’s storyline centers on ‘Prabhendhu Nambhoothiri’, a young man from a respectable family in Kerala. While his parents envision a future for him as a priest, he harbors a secret ambition to be a singer. Facing financial difficulties, Prabhendhu returns home, temporarily setting aside his aspirations. Initially, he assists his cousin with priestly duties but soon encounters the ghostly presence of ‘Delulu’. This meeting alters the course of his life dramatically.

As ‘Delulu’ integrates into Prabhendhu’s world, she positively influences his journey and encourages him to explore his emotions. Their bond grows, creating an inseparable connection. During this time, Prabhendhu falls for ‘Saadhya’, prompting playful teasing from ‘Delulu’. However, she harbors a secret about her past that eventually comes to light, unveiling her identity as ‘Maya Mathew’, a former classmate who had feelings for him prior to her tragic demise.

Reflecting on the film’s success, Akhil Sathyan expressed his belief that “Sarvam Maya” would resonate with audiences, yet he was pleasantly surprised by its blockbuster status. He emphasized his collaborative efforts with Nivin Pauly to ensure the film’s appeal. Akhil highlighted that the film incorporates essential commercial elements suited for family entertainment, including humor, music, and relatable themes without resorting to exaggerated tropes. He described his focus on realistic situations serving as obstacles in the storyline, rather than conventional antagonists.

With “Sarvam Maya” making waves both commercially and within the narrative arts, the intriguing blend of fantasy and reality has sparked conversations among viewers. The film serves as a testament to the power of storytelling rooted in authentic experiences. What are your thoughts on the film and Akhil Sathyan’s insights?
