Dharmendra, a legendary figure in Indian cinema, has been posthumously awarded the esteemed Padma Vibhushan, a testament to his remarkable contributions to the film industry. This recognition has sparked a wave of emotional tributes, reflecting on his enduring legacy.
Hema Malini, a fellow actor and close associate, expressed her pride on social media following the announcement. She remarked on the significance of the honor, emphasizing how it acknowledges Dharmendra’s monumental impact on Indian cinema. Her heartfelt words highlight the affection and respect he garnered throughout his career.
Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol embarked on his cinematic journey in 1960 with the film “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere,” starting his career at the age of 24. Initially, he took on supporting roles in well-received films such as “Bandini” and “Kaajal.” However, it was his performance in the 1965 war drama “Haqeeqat” that established him as a leading figure at the box office.
Throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, Dharmendra solidified his status as a superstar with a series of iconic films, including “Sholay,” “Seeta Aur Geeta,” and “Yaadon Ki Baaraat.” His versatility allowed him to shine in various genres, making him a household name across generations. His last appearance on screen was in the film “Ikkis,” which hit theaters earlier this year.
In a tragic turn of events, Dharmendra passed away on November 24 of the previous year at his home in Mumbai, at the age of 89. His health had been a concern, leading to a recent hospitalization, from which he returned home to recuperate. His cremation took place a day later, marking the end of an era for many of his fans.
A prayer meet organized by his sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, drew numerous stars from the film industry, such as Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Notably, Hema Malini and her daughters arranged a separate prayer gathering at her residence on the same day, showcasing the close-knit relationships within the family during this difficult time.
Dharmendra is survived by both his wives—Prakash Kaur, whom he married in 1954, and with whom he had four children, including actors Sunny and Bobby Deol; and Hema Malini, his wife since 1980, with whom he has two daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol. His legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of fans and the film community he leaves behind.
