Chris Wood claimed a thrilling victory at the Egypt Golf Series Marassi 1 by securing a birdie on the first play-off hole, overcoming fellow Englishman Charlie Crockett. This event took place at the Address Marassi Golf Resort as part of the MENA Golf Tour.
Both Wood and Crockett concluded regulation play tied at 13 under par. Wood finished his final round with a one-under 71, while Crockett delivered a strong performance with a three-under 69, leading to a sudden-death play-off amid challenging weather conditions.
During the play-off on the par-five 18th, Crockett putted first, but his birdie attempt went wide. Wood followed with a precise two-iron shot from the semi-rough, setting up a six-foot downhill putt, which he converted to clinch his second title of the season on the MENA Golf Tour.
With this victory, Wood jumped to the top of the MENA Golf Tour Rankings, surpassing Italy’s Ludovico Addabbo, who finished tied for 22nd at two under par.
Wood reflected on the day’s challenges, stating, “It was a really tough day out there. From the start, we could barely see the green on the first tee – it was so dusty and windy.” He credited his experience for helping him navigate the conditions and emphasized the importance of capitalizing on opportunities during play-offs.
Throughout the final round, the players contended with swirling sand and strong winds, which complicated visibility. Wood’s round was marked by resilience; despite a double bogey on the par-five seventh, he regrouped on the back nine, making vital birdies at the 12th and 13th holes to maintain his competitive edge.
On the 54th hole, with the pressure on to secure the clubhouse lead at 13 under, Wood stepped up and made a crucial putt. “When you’re in that situation, it brings total clarity – you know you’ve got to hole it,” he noted, describing the satisfying feeling of seeing his ball track towards the hole.
Crockett, who came in as runner-up after his recent finish at New Giza, appeared to be on the verge of victory after reaching 14 under with three holes left. However, a three-putt bogey at the 17th brought him back to 13 under, allowing Wood to match his score and set the stage for the play-off.
Ireland’s Alex Maguire secured third place at 12 under after a strong opening round of 63. Despite a dropped shot at the 12th, he rallied with birdies on the 13th, 15th, and 18th holes, falling just short of a potential three-way playoff with a close 30-foot eagle attempt.
Mathieu Decottignies-Lafon from France and Italy’s Matteo Cristoni tied for fourth place at eight under, while England’s Jordan Wrisdale and Sweden’s David Lundgren shared sixth at seven under. Finland’s Lauri Ruuska, the New Giza champion, finished tied for 12th at four under with a final round of 73, while Scotland’s Aidan O’Hagan fell to a share of 42nd at one over after a closing 80.
With the win, Wood earned $18,000 from the tournament’s $100,000 prize fund, alongside valuable Official World Golf Ranking points as the MENA Golf Tour continues its Egypt swing. The tour will remain at Address Marassi Golf Resort for the upcoming Egypt Golf Series Marassi 2, set to begin on January 29.
