Emirati Cricket Visionary: A Journey from Sharjah to Global Fame

Hailed as the “Kerry Packer of the Middle East,” Abdulrahman Bukhatir is a legendary figure in the world of cricket promotion. His highly anticipated autobiography is set to launch on February 14, chronicling a remarkable journey that has significantly shaped the sport in the region.

The book narrates Bukhatir’s evolution from a schoolboy captivated by cricket during his years in Pakistan to a key businessman instrumental in establishing cricket in the UAE. His efforts were pivotal in transforming the Sharjah Cricket Stadium into a globally recognized venue, renowned for hosting thrilling matches that drew international attention.

In the 1980s, Bukhatir’s vision paralleled that of Australian media tycoon Kerry Packer, who reinvented cricket in the 1970s with white-ball matches and colored clothing. Bukhatir was foundational in making Sharjah the world’s leading neutral cricket venue, famous for high-stakes contests that attracted fans and celebrities alike.

Memorable moments at Sharjah, such as Javed Miandad’s iconic last-ball six against India in 1986 and Sachin Tendulkar’s exceptional performance in 1998, solidified the stadium’s legacy. First hosting an international match in 1984, Sharjah set a Guinness World Record with 255 One-Day Internationals.

Another of Bukhatir’s significant contributions was the establishment of the Cricketers’ Benefit Fund Series (CBFS), which aimed to provide financial assistance to retired international players from South Asia. In a 2022 interview, he expressed pride in the initiative, highlighting that it distributed $4 million as prize money without restrictions.

Bukhatir views Sharjah as the most glamorous neutral venue in cricket, emphasizing the impact of celebrity involvement in the sport. He notes that this blend of entertainment and sports helped lay the groundwork for a billion-dollar broadcast industry.

An admirer of renowned batsman Hanif Mohammad, Bukhatir also played a vital role in promoting club cricket in the UAE during the 1970s. His dedication has significantly contributed to the UAE’s status as a dominant cricketing force in the Middle East, with the national team now preparing for its third ICC T20 World Cup appearance in India from February 7 to March 8.

This autobiography is more than just a personal narrative; it’s a tribute to a visionary who has seen cricket as a means of uniting diverse South Asian communities within the UAE and beyond.
