Music composer AR Rahman is currently navigating a controversy sparked by his comments on Chhaava and the issue of communalism in Bollywood. In a recent interaction, he expressed his readiness to move past the backlash, emphasizing a desire for listeners to engage with his core message rather than fixate on misunderstandings.
During a video discussion with singer-comedian Alexander Babu, Rahman responded to inquiries about his previous statements. He noted the necessity of preparing for various life circumstances and suggested redirecting the conversation, implying that the matter at hand was already well understood by those who matter.
When Babu expressed disappointment that Rahman felt the need to justify his love for India, Rahman quipped that those who know him do not require an explanation, hinting at a certain futility in attempting to clarify one’s intentions to those unwilling to listen.
The controversy arose following Rahman’s remarks in an interview with the BBC Asian Network. When asked about possible prejudice he faced as a Tamil composer in Bollywood, he acknowledged that while he had not personally felt such bias, he noted a power shift in the industry that could carry communal undertones. Rahman criticized Chhaava for its exploitation of divisive narratives within society.
In response to the backlash, Rahman issued a video statement affirming his commitment to using music as a means of connection and cultural celebration. He stressed that his creative endeavors stem from a place of sincerity and a desire to uplift rather than cause distress.
Looking ahead, Rahman is set to perform at his Wonderment Tour in Chennai on February 14, with tickets ranging from ₹4,000 to ₹28,000. The event will take place at the Nehru Outdoor Stadium, starting at 6:30 PM, promising to be a significant occasion for fans and admirers of the renowned composer.
