Netflix’s upcoming film, Ghooskhor Pandat, has quickly faced controversy following its announcement. Just two days after the film was unveiled, a writ petition was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to block its release, citing concerns that the title is defamatory towards the Brahmin community and offensive.
The petition was submitted by Mahender Chaturvedi through Advocate Vineet Jindal. It aims to obtain a writ of mandamus to prevent the film’s streaming. Ghooskhor Pandat stars Manoj Bajpayee in the role of a misbehaving police officer known as Pandat. The film was announced during Netflix’s Next on Netflix 2026 event in Mumbai, and its first look teaser was subsequently shared on various social media platforms.
Describing himself as an Acharya dedicated to the study and teaching of Indian scriptures, the petitioner expressed concern that linking the term ‘Pandat’ with ghooskhori (bribery) tarnishes the reputation and dignity of the Brahmin community and his profession. The petition specifically targets Netflix India’s decision to promote the film under this title.
Moreover, the complaint highlights that the term ‘Pandat’ historically represents scholarship and ethical conduct, reinforcing its importance in Indian culture and religious traditions. Chaturvedi argues that the film’s release could violate fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 21, and 25 of the Constitution, as it discriminates against a particular social and religious group and undermines their dignity and identity.
Additionally, the petitioner accuses the Government of India of failing to implement an effective regulatory framework to manage the creative expression on OTT platforms. The backlash against the film’s teaser on social media was significant, with many users expressing outrage over the title and threatening to boycott Netflix if changes were not made.
As of now, Netflix India has not issued a response regarding the developing situation. If they choose to comment, updates to the story will be provided.
The film’s logline presents an intriguing premise: “A bent police officer, Ajay Dikshit’s (Pandat), plans for an eventful and lucrative night are disrupted when he finds himself embroiled in a global conspiracy while trying to uncover the identity of a severely injured girl discarded from a moving vehicle in the heart of Delhi.”
Ghooskhor Pandat features an ensemble cast including Nushrat Bharuccha, Saqib Saleem, Akshay Oberoi, and Divya Dutta. The screenplay is penned by Neeraj Pandey and Ritesh Shah, with the latter making his directorial debut. The film is anticipated to launch on Netflix later this year, although a specific release date has yet to be announced.
