Aditya Dhar’s cinematic venture, Dhurandhar, has made a profound impact on Hindi film history, amassing over ₹1300 crore globally. This remarkable box office achievement highlights the film’s success and its potential for a highly lucrative sequel, outpacing previous blockbusters like RRR and KGF Chapter 2.
The film was initially conceived as a long single feature, but a strategic decision to split it into two parts emerged shortly before release. As Dhar struggled to trim the runtime to a manageable length, partitioning the film allowed it to maximize profits. The gamble proved beneficial, as the first installment resonated strongly with audiences and performed exceedingly well at the box office.
In terms of numbers, Dhurandhar accumulated ₹1004 crore in India and an impressive $33 million internationally. The producer’s share from the Indian market is around ₹360 crore, supplemented by approximately $15 million from overseas earnings. Additionally, revenue from digital, satellite, and music rights reached ₹140 crore, bringing the total recovery from these sources to nearly ₹650 crore. With a production budget of ₹400 crore now split between the two films, and accounting for marketing costs, the total expenditure for Part 1 stands around ₹250 crore. This positions Dhurandhar with a healthy profit margin of ₹400 crore, marking it as one of the most profitable Indian films to date.
Comparatively, Dhurandhar’s profit eclipses that of many high-grossing films. Jawan, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, remains the only Bollywood film surpassing it with profits exceeding ₹400 crore. Other blockbusters like Pathaan and Animal show lesser figures at ₹330 crore and ₹250 crore, respectively. Films such as Gadar 2 and Stree 2 lag significantly, primarily due to lower non-theatrical revenue.
On an even broader scale, Dhurandhar outshines several pan-India successes, including SS Rajamouli’s RRR, credited with profits of over ₹250 crore, and Yash’s KGF Chapter 2, also at ₹250 crore. Although both RRR and Kalki 2898 AD garnered substantial non-theatrical earnings, their profits were dampened by high production costs, each exceeding ₹550 crore.
However, Dhurandhar’s ₹400 crore profit does not claim the highest record in Indian cinema. That title is held by Baahubali 2 and Pushpa 2, each boasting profits exceeding ₹600 crore.
The film is notable for its star-studded cast, featuring Ranveer Singh in the lead role as an Indian spy operating in Pakistan, alongside Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Sanjay Dutt. Audiences eagerly await the sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, set to release in theaters on March 19.
