Aparna Purohit: The New Leader of Aamir Khan Productions Steps Up

Bollywood star Aamir Khan has made a significant return to the film industry after a hiatus following the lackluster performance of “Laal Singh Chaddha” in 2022. He recently appeared in “Sitaare Zameen Par,” released in 2025. In a conversation with Variety India, Aamir shared his plans to shift focus towards acting while stepping back from his production company, Aamir Khan Productions.

Aamir Khan announced that Aparna Purohit will take over as the CEO of Aamir Khan Productions. He expressed confidence in her abilities, stating, “I’ve taken a big decision. My company, Aamir Khan Productions, is now being headed by Aparna Purohit.” He further explained that upcoming projects, which she will oversee, are set for release in 2026, including titles like “Happy Patel,” “Ek Din,” and “Lahore 1947.”

Purohit’s capabilities were emphasized as Aamir expressed his desire for her to independently run the company. “Aparna is highly capable of handling the entire production house on her own. Of course, I am there if needed, but I want her to independently run AKP,” he noted. Excited about future storytelling opportunities, Aamir looks forward to selecting his next project.

Aparna Purohit’s qualifications as the new CEO are notable. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Journalism from Lady Shri Ram College at Delhi University and holds an MA in Mass Communications, Films, and TV from Jamia Millia Islamia. Her career began at UTV Motion Pictures as a line producer before she moved on to roles at BIG Pictures, Reliance Big Entertainment, and eventually Amazon Prime Video.

During her tenure at Amazon Prime Video, Purohit rose through the ranks, becoming Head of India Originals in 2019 and later heading Indian and Southeast Asian Originals. She played an instrumental role in producing acclaimed series such as “Made in Heaven,” “Paatal Lok,” “The Family Man,” and “Mirzapur.”

In 2024, Purohit stepped into her role at Aamir Khan Productions and led the successful film “Sitaare Zameen Par.” This sports comedy-drama is an official remake of the 2018 Spanish film “Champions,” revolving around a suspended basketball coach who aids a team of players with disabilities in preparation for a tournament. The film proved to be a box office hit, grossing ₹267.34 crore worldwide.

Looking ahead, Aamir Khan Productions is set to release “Ek Din,” a romantic drama starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi. This film is a remake of the 2016 Thai movie “One Day,” and it is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1.
