India’s cricket team faces a setback as seam bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the Twenty20 World Cup due to a knee injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this on Friday, announcing that Mohammed Siraj will step in as Rana’s replacement.
Rana experienced the injury during a warm-up match against South Africa, where he bowled only one over before leaving the field. This development raises concerns for the team’s dynamics, as Rana has also been useful as a lower-order batsman.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav commented on the situation, indicating that Rana’s condition did not look promising. However, he expressed confidence in the squad’s depth and adaptability to cope with the absence of the injured player.
The team will likely rely on Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh to take on the new-ball responsibilities, supplemented by all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube. Yadav acknowledged the impact of Rana’s loss, noting that the selection of a 15-player squad was made with various combinations in mind.
The International Cricket Council has officially approved Siraj’s inclusion as a replacement for Rana. India aims to make history by becoming the first team to defend its T20 World Cup title and also to win as the host nation.
The current squad includes notable players such as Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Abhishek Sharma, and wicketkeepers Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, alongside a strong bowling lineup featuring Bumrah, Arshdeep, and the newly added Siraj. With the Group A match against the United States approaching, the team will need to quickly adjust to their revised lineup.
