SS Rajamouli Breaks the Trend with Varanasi and Reveals Film Details

SS Rajamouli, a renowned director, is set to break the trend of two-part film releases with his upcoming movie, “Varanasi.” Following the immense success of “Baahubali,” which popularized this format, many filmmakers have attempted to replicate its magic. However, Rajamouli’s new project marks a return to a single, cohesive story, featuring an impressive cast that includes Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant Plus, Rajamouli clarified that “Varanasi” will be released as a standalone film. When questioned about the possibility of multiple parts, he stated that the idea was briefly considered but ultimately discarded. This marks a significant shift for Rajamouli, known for his epics, as “Varanasi” will not follow the trend of dividing narratives into multiple segments.

The runtime of “Varanasi” has been a topic of interest, with speculation suggesting it might extend to approximately 200 minutes. Rajamouli confirmed this estimate, indicating the film would likely run for around three hours. His previous films, especially the acclaimed “Baahubali” series, set high expectations for storytelling and cinematic experience, which he aims to meet with this new endeavor.

Rajamouli, who gained international recognition with “RRR,” also mentioned ongoing developments related to sequels, including one planned for “RRR.” However, these projects have yet to be officially announced. “Varanasi” will stand as his first film not divided into parts since “Eega,” released in 2012.

“Varanasi” is co-written by Vijayendra Prasad, Rajamouli’s father, and is produced by Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business. The film will feature Mahesh Babu in a dual role, portraying Rudhra and a brief appearance as Lord Ram. Priyanka Chopra takes on the role of Mandakini, while Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the antagonist, Kumbha. Audiences can anticipate the film’s theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
